I had a chat with Sampa while sitting on the stage before her recent show at Gold Diggers in LA. We talked about the first song she ever wrote, her memories of her parents playing folk tapes from Zambia, her first time listening to 2Pac, studying to be a film director in San Francisco, why she decided to go to Australia, the amazing music scene in Melbourne, working with Perrin Moss and Blue Lab Beats, listening to South Sudan rapper Krown while on tour, having flowers on stage, healing, and the metaphor of flowers to show what happens after healing, why people keep asking her if she likes to sprint, painting, how to take home with you wherever you go, returning to the truest form of yourself, filming the “Final Form” music video in Zambia, and the profound concept behind her new album, The Return, out next month via Ninja Tune and available as a red and green vinyl package in honor of the Zambian flag.
