Diggin’ This: Khun Narin Electric Phin Band – “Sut Sanaen (สุดสะแนน)” (Innovative Leisure)

Listen out for that electrified phin, a traditional Thai lute with only three strings that generates a psychedelic centrifugal spiral upon which this entire piece spins.

The multi-generational Khun Narin Electric Phin Band started out playing village parades and weddings in their home province of Phetchabun in rural lower-northern Thailand.

Imbued with a distorted yet celebratory sound that unceasingly builds momentum, the band’s latest instrumental track is “Sut Sanaen (สุดสะแนน),which refers to a lai or a melodic structure employed in the Isaan region’s traditional Molam folk music.

The title also loosely translates to “absolutely stunning” or “a blissful feeling of happiness or a deep sense of completeness.
