Rewinding 12 years, I remember falling in love with the sound of BadBadNotGood at the end of 2011 when I first heard their instrumental cover of “Electric Relaxation” (read the original post here).

 

 

Manchester, UK quartet OMA are on a similar wavelength. Released at the start of 2024, Bread ‘n’ Butter is their brilliant album of instrumental covers of 90s hip-hop standards.

 

 

It’s hard to pick a favorite, but I’m going to go with “Shook Ones, Pt. II” for that iconic guitar line. “N.Y. State of Mind” is a very close second. And, true to form, there’s the band’s own take on “Electric Relaxation.”
