Diggin’ This: Yu Su – “Watermelon Woman” (Technicolour Records)
New sonics for September.
Starting with a slinky beat and kaleidoscopic synth cascades, “Watermelon Woman” by Vancouver-via-Kaifeng, China artist and classically trained musician Yu Su steadily progresses into an airy electronic house groover complete with bleep ricochets, bubbling bass, and, of course, a playful flute in homage to the track’s inspiration, Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man.”
Track of the day.
Yu Su – “Watermelon Woman”
“Watermelon Woman” is out now via Technicolour Records. Get it here and listen to one of my favorite Dilla-driven re-edits of Herbie Hancock’s “Watermelon Man” that never leaves my DJ crate here.
Make sure to see Yu Su live alongside Actress, Julianna Barwick, Octo Octa, and more at the Ninja Tune & dublab Muse ‘til Midnight: The Allure of Music event at LACMA on September 7. More info here.
