Diggin’ This: Ego Ella May – “The Morning Side Of Love” (Chico Hamilton Cover) (Blue Note Records)
A South London Blue Note bop.
After thoroughly enjoying the first installment of Blue Note covers as reimagined by the best of the UK soul and jazz scene on the Blue Note Re:imagined album released back in 2020 (seriously, how good was that Jorja Smith cover of Rose Rouge?!), I was therefore incredibly happy to learn about the sequel launching later this year.
Featured among an array of British jazz and soul luminaries such as Oscar Jerome and Theon Cross, Ego Ella May reinterprets Chico Hamilton’s “The Morning Side of Love,” which originally appeared on his 1975 album, Peregrinations, into a calm yet bass-heavy soul strut.
