Diggin’ This: Brandon Coleman – “Blast Off” (Brainfeeder)
A supernova-sized cosmic funk explosion packed into just 1min 48sec.
No stranger to collaborations within the Brainfeeder family, the LA-based vocalist, composer, producer, arranger, and keyboard wizard has worked with label mainstay Thundercat and founder Flying Lotus, while also playing regularly with Kamasi Washington, who has been known to introduce Brandon Coleman onstage as “Professor Boogie.”
His latest single, “Blast Off,” blends the energy and ethos of George Clinton, George Duke, and Chick Corea with Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”
It’s “a celestial encounter for your eardrum,” says Brandon. “This record is a reflection of how I felt about time, space, and celestial energy. I love space movies like Interstellar and The Martian—and I thought to myself, if I was traveling through space what would I want to hear?”
