Music by Dan Digs: “Ornette”

The shape of jazz that was to come.

Listen to my tribute to jazz legend Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman, who sadly passed away on Thursday at the age of 85.

It’s no wonder that my laptop keeps trying to autocorrect “Ornette” to “ornate” as I write this; the jazz composer’s signature untethered brass flourishes and timbre are some of the most beautifully designed pieces the genre has ever known.

“Ornette” is centered around the first few notes of “Lonely Woman,” the first track from Coleman’s landmark 1959 album The Shape of Jazz to Come.
