Diggin’ This: WVR BVBY – “And Another Thing” (Plug Seven Records)

Ah, Melbourne, is there anything you can’t do?

Kllo, Lanks, Woodes, 30/70 Collective, Crepes, Slum Sociable, I’lls, Chet Faker, and of course, Hiatus Kaiyote, are just some of the city’s finest to have featured on this here site and/or radio show at some time or another.

Today we add to that esteemed list the jazz 8-piece WVR BVBY. Pronounced “war baby,” the group is fronted by bassist Carl Lindeberg. His parents apparently first met and fell in love during the Gulf War, resulting in the arrival of Lindeberg himself and the band’s name.

“And Another Thing” is arguably my favorite track on the band’s new album. Clocking in at nearly 11 minutes, it’s an instrumental jazz journey populated with flowering brass, chilled keys, guitar washes, and an array of delicate drum grooves.

Fingers crossed for a Thundercat and/or Kamasi Washington collaboration with WVR BVBY in our very near future.

Track of the day.
