Lonnie Holley – “Six Space Shuttles and 144,000 Elephants” (Official Video)

“Six Space Shuttles and 144,000 Elephants” is quite possibly my new favorite song title.

Lonnie Holley, born on February 10, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama, is the seventh of twenty-seven children. Childhood was chaotic: from the age of 5, Holley worked various jobs such as picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre, washing dishes, and cooking. He lived in a whiskey house, on the state fairgrounds, and in several foster homes. Since the age of 29, Holley has devoted his life to what he calls “improvisational creativity.” His art and music, born out of struggle, hardship, and a furious curiosity, has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound.
