Lone – “Aurora Northern Quarter”
Taking the stomp of his fantastic “Airglow Fires” (which made #50 in my Top 100 Songs of 2013 list—listen and download the DJ mix of this list here), Lone returns with a fifth album, Reality Testing, and a brand new single, “Aurora Northern Quarter.”
The Manchester, UK producer otherwise known as Matt Cutler describes his latest work as two different musical ideas becoming one.
“I was listening to a lot of Detroit techno and old Chicago house that had the same grain and dirtiness to it as a lot of the hip-hop I was listening to.”
“That was the real spark—I wanted to make an album that had both hip-hop and house beats, but that weren’t completely different from each other, that shared the same sort of vibe. I love the idea of two things sat side by side, but instead of it seeming like they’re complete opposites, [it’s more that] those two things could almost be the same thing.”
“Aurora Northern Quarter,” is a homage, no doubt, to the Northern Quarter, Manchester’s arts district. The track displays Lone‘s signature controlled and muted color palette from start to finish, weaving the native electronic sounds of London (broken beat), Detroit (techno), and Chicago (house) together to create one of 2014’s most refreshing club tracks to date.
