Phife from A Tribe Called Quest – “Dear Dilla” (Free MP3 Download)

Funny how this morning began with an extended conversation with friends at our music startup about the genius of N.E.R.D.’s “In Search of…”—a conversation I am always happy to have—and then shortly afterward my email inbox got hipped to Phife Dawg‘s latest musical missive, the J Dilla tribute “Dear Dilla,” which sounds a lot like an early Pharrell production, what with its Rhodes licks (played by Detroit’s V.Rich) and upfront, uncut drums.

“Dear Dilla” is an emotive letter from Phife to the dearly departed producer, spit over a KC & the Sunshine Band break expertly put together by DJ Rasta Root. This is the same drum loop that Dilla used when he produced Slum Village’s “Hold Tight.”
