BenZel – “Fallin’ Love” (Demo) (Free Download)

Space-age R&B slow jams are still where it’s at.

Dig BenZel, who describe themselves as two Japanese teenagers with “a profound appreciation for ’90s R&B and J Dilla.”

Fresh from partnering with Jessie Ware on “If You Love Me,” a marvellous rework of the 1994 hit by L.A. vocal group Brownstone, Umi Takahashi (15) and Yoko Watanabe (16), originally from Osaka, ended up in New York through their local foreign exchange program and met in early 2012 through an online message board about ankle socks. This is the part of their Soundcloud bio where I begin to think that BenZel might just be two Williamsburg kids being sneaky and working under an assumed identity.

Either way, no matter, this track is brilliant.

Bonus points for spotting the samples lifted from SWV’s Timbaland and Missy-penned “Can We” and Craig David’s “Insomnia.”
