ESSENTIAL K-POP
1. Infinite – “The Chaser”
(Woollim Entertainment’s 7-member boy band. Video has cars flipping and a dude on a motorcycle cutting fluorescent lights with a katana.)
2. 4Minute – “Volume Up”
(Cube Entertainment’s flagship girl group, which includes Kim Hyun Ah (HyunA) who made waves with “Bubble Pop” last year. Produced by Shisadong Tiger.)
3. Sistar – “Alone”
(Starship Entertainment’s flagship group. Produced by Brave Brothers. Brave Brothers and Shisadong Tiger are two of the biggest producers in K-Pop. 4Minute and Sistar’s comebacks came within days of each other, so this is being considered by some to be a “head-to-head” battle.)
THROWBACK J-POP
4. Haruomi Hosono – “Sportsmen”
(Classic song from Harry Hosono’s [Yellow Magic Orchestra] solo album. Epitomizes the sound of DJ Hojo’s new night at the Living Room in Seattle, City Hunter.)
MODERN J-POP
5. Nirgilis – “Shiny Shiny” (Livetune Remix)
(Closing theme song to the show “Deadman Wonderland,” remixed by “doujin” (internet-based) music group Livetune, which is really just one guy named kZ, who is a renowned composer of Miku Hatsune songs.)
6. Perfume – “Spring of Life”
(Perfume is DJ Hojo’s favorite J-Pop group in the world right now. Produced by Yasutaka Nakata (Capsule, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, Ami Suzuki, MEG), this is their first single on Warner Japan. Hojo wants to live in this breakdown forever.)
NEW GENRE ALERT! J-GARAGE
7. Fu_mou – “Green Night Parade”
(Fu_mou is a producer from Tokyo who has releases on both Altema and Maltine records. His Green Night Parade EP takes the motif of Kirby’s Adventure and expands it into scintillating dance music.)
8. Submerse – “Majika Madoku”
(Garage producer from the U.K. who moved to Japan to surround himself with J-Pop’s brilliance. Calls this new genre “J-Garage.” This is a remix of Madoka Magica’s theme, originally sung by ClariS.)
9. Submerse – “Muteki”
(Another track from Submerse, this connects the dots between the U.K.’s dubstep scene and J-Garage.)
1:48 Jessie Ware – “Running” (Disclosure Remix)
1:52 Beat Connection – “The Palace Garden, 4am”
LAST ONE AS THE LIGHTS GO ON IS A HAND-CLAPPIN’, FOOT-STOMPIN’, ROOTSY SINGALONG COVER
1:55 Hope & Social/Ellen and the Escapades – “Addicted to Love” (Robert Palmer Cover)
Hope all is good with your good self. Enjoy the show.
